Orvis or Cordland Certified
Two Trips Offered

First Class Flyfishing Trip:

fly fish on private water Stay at an Orvis certified Private Lodge. Long days filled with fresh air, and nights spent in front of the fireplace discussing the day's catch. Private guides every day on miles of private waters (the long-time guides will be there to welcome you back each year). Shop talk about the latest rods, breathable waders, and more. You can "test fish" any of the Orvis rods. Try wading to broad riffles and deep pools of the gold medal Colorado river and tributaries, or short, acute casting on fast-moving Troublesome Creek. ==NOTE==The large ranch has been sold in 2010. The land might be sold to the Nature Conservancy.

In 2007, new, improved and more exciting waters to fish were added. Catch-and-release policy protects the large populations and large fish, up to ten pounds. There are miles of deep cut river banks which hold large numbers of large brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout which thrive in nutrient rich water and feed well on the spring mayflies, caught with both dry flies and nymphing techniques. You will receive instruction from beginning casting to advanced moving-water technique. Although there is a fully stocked shop on the premises, we can send you a list of recommended items to bring. The Ranch owns two miles of the Colorado River, on its 272 private acres.

The ranch was built of milled log timber back in 1984, with additions and improvements over the years. The main lodge has a gathering room with a tall ceiling and moss-rock fireplace, and glass patio windows to view the landscape. Only a select few lodges are given the Orvis endorsement. It is open May to September. Founder Andrew Shepard set out to build a premier fishing lodge on the "gold waters" of Colorado River and reviews of its guests witness his success.

Rocky Mt. Gormet Dining

fish dinnerWhile breakfast provides the day's fuel, and lunch a chance to relax on the stream, dinner is the shining crown of Elktrout cuisine. What better way to end a day on the water than with good food and company. During the summer, we return to the lodge in late afternoon for an early dinner at 5:30pm. This permits you to catch the evening hatch after one of Chef Bobby Holtzman's superb meals. At Elktrout you'll enjoy your meals in the authentic setting of a turn-of-the-century dining tent with real crystal chandeliers.
Dinners often begin with delicious soups like Manhattan clam chowder, broccoli or tomato basil. Some nights we start with a spinach or caesar salad coated with our fresh house dressings. But soups and salads are only the beginning of the feast. Slow roasted prime rib, Hawaiian style pork tenderloin, ruby red trout, Chilean sea bass or lamb chops are equally likely to find their way on to the table. And every meal is blessed with fresh bread from our own kitchen. Homemade ice cream, sorbets, crème brule, blackberry cream cheese frosted white cake - need we say more?

By Ron, Dallas, Texas: "Everything at (the retreat) clicks, all of the staff, from the moment you check in, makes you feel completely comfortable and welcome to be at their facility. Our guide, Paul, was a real pleasure to fish with, he knew the water and was patient with his teaching."

The Less Expensive Route:
Stay in the small town of Kremmling. We'll hook you up with a Cordland certified store who's owner's knowledge and tips will spin your brain! He'll point you in the right direction for the best fishing sight that week. Or, for an additional fee, you can have a guide for a day or two to show you around, and give you some fishing tips. You can fish at a different spot every day of the week, and be delighted with your catch. We'll include maps, and tips on how to get to some "gold water" and "quality water" locations; as well as a list of spectacular Scenic Byways, and directions to the Rocky Mt. National Park, where you can add to your week's pleasures. Accommodations are inexpensive, including a local 1904 boardinghouse. Note, the rooms are clean and decorated in an old time or Western theme, but are not modern. A modern motel is available for $55 more a night. Seven days: $450 to $695 (includes room and breakfast; and tips on locations; day guide extra). Prices subject to change

The area also has other sporting activities available (on your own): kayaking, rafting, hiking, mountain biking, 4WD/OHV or ATV, and sightseeing, including the Rocky Mt. National Park, a couple hours away. Enjoy the Colorado Scenic ByWays, including Gore Canyon and the Colorado River.

Float fishing: The Upper Colorado River flows westward from its headwaters in Rocky Mountain National Park. We can arrange for experienced anglers a float fish trip on a section of the river. The river is wide and the scenery is beautiful. Floating the river you will find broad meanders, moderate rapids and areas of calm water. Fly fish primarily for rainbow and brown trout which vary in size from 8 to 18 inches and, although cutthroat trout are not as plentiful, we do hook them occasionally. We offer an overnight trip where we camp on the banks of the river. Dinner and breakfast are cooked at camp. 1 or 2 per raft for a full Day is $320, or for overnight $520. .
