Writing Tips
(June/July 2010)"Do You Write When You are In the Passion?"
"Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility" said William Wordsworth. He gives one side of the issue; do you write when you are in your passion? The pros are that your emotions are strong, vivid, and you feel an urgency to write. The cons are that you may write haphazardly, uneven, carelessly and may get the message scrambled. The other way of handling it, you can write after the extreme emotion has settled. The pros would be that you are more disciplined, logical, see the matter from a distance, have control of your verbage, and may be able to get the message across more logically. The cons are that it may be dulled, artless and too technical.
What do you think? You can give it a try, and then journal about your conclusions. I personally think that you should write in the emotion, and then go back to the piece and clean it up a short while later. Plus, you can add the bonus of contemplation.
Writing Exercise.
(June/July 2010)"Put Magic in Your Writing, from a Magician"
Have you ever sat down and starting reading a book and been surprisingly mesmerized by the writing? Sometimes it seems like magic how a great book can arise out of a common story. A magician's job is the same way. He stands in front of the public and he can either do cliche or amazing tricks. All the magicians have the same "rule book," but it's how they conduct their performance and present the tricks that will result in amazement or cool enjoyment. How do you make the moment your reader sits down and reads your book or article into a memorable surprise of fresh delight? Try some of the magician's techniques out, like distracting you from their slight-of-hand tricks, or pulling in assistants (side characters) to stimulate your excitement, or pulling things out of places you never expected, or pretending to make a mistake, or using splashy objects to engage you. All of these peripheral bits are part of great showmanship, knowing what to add when and where.
It takes a lot of practice, just like a magician, so that your reader is not even aware of what you are doing. And, then bam! the final moment of revelation! Isn't life mostly made up of small details? Are you ignoring these in your writing? Do you concentrate too hard on your big moment, or goal? Pick a climatic subject, like a tornado hitting a house and the beloved dog being carried off into the whirlwind. Now begin one day earlier and write your short story (2 or 3 pages) of little things that make that tornado ten times more dramatic and poignant.
